Material overview

Why industrial buyers specify Monel 400

Alloy 400 is a single-phase solid-solution nickel-copper alloy that can be strengthened by cold work. It is valued for toughness, seawater service and resistance to many reducing media. Some heats may be magnetic at room temperature, so magnetic requirements should be stated.

Marine resistance

Useful resistance in flowing seawater and established use in pumps, valves, shafts and fasteners.

Low-temperature toughness

Maintains toughness without a ductile-to-brittle transition at very low temperatures.

Chemical service

Used in selected reducing media, process vessels, piping and heat-transfer equipment.

Buyer questions

Monel 400 FAQ

Quick answers for initial sourcing. Confirm critical engineering requirements against the governing specification.

Can Monel 400 be hardened by heat treatment?

No. Alloy 400 is a solid-solution alloy and is strengthened primarily by cold working.

Is Monel 400 always non-magnetic?

No. Its Curie temperature can fall near room temperature and magnetic response can vary by heat. State any strict magnetic requirement.

Why is Monel 400 used in marine equipment?

It combines toughness with resistance to many seawater conditions, particularly in flowing service, but velocity and stagnant-water conditions still matter.
