Monel 400 Plate, Sheet & Strip RFQ Guide

A checkable Alloy 400 inquiry should identify the exact flat-product form, ASTM B127 edition, dimensions, condition, tolerances, inspection, marking and export packing.

Nickel alloy plate and sheet prepared for industrial supplyRepresentative product-form image. Confirm actual surface, dimensions and condition with the quotation.

Start with product form

Plate, sheet, strip and coil require different RFQ details

State whether the requirement is plate, cut sheet, slit strip, coil or cut blanks. Include thickness, width, length or coil dimensions, quantity and the dimensional tolerances that control acceptance. If the material will be formed, stamped or machined, add rolling direction, edge condition, flatness and machining allowance where relevant.

Use Monel 400 / Alloy 400 / UNS N04400 / W.Nr. 2.4360 or 2.4361 for material identity, while the purchaser-approved specification, drawing and purchase order remain controlling.

Controlling standard

Use the correct ASTM B127 edition

Scope

ASTM B127 covers rolled UNS N04400 nickel-copper alloy plate, sheet and strip. Cite the exact edition required by the drawing or project specification.

Dimensions

Thickness, width, length, straightness, edges, squareness and flatness can affect acceptance. Put the required values or referenced tolerance table in the inquiry.

Properties and condition

Chemistry, mechanical properties, hardness and grain-size requirements depend on the applicable specification and ordered condition. Do not substitute a generic “standard condition.”

ASME SB-127 may be required for code work. Do not assume ASTM B127 and ASME SB-127 are interchangeable for a specific project; quote the document and edition shown on the approved material list.

RFQ fields

Information needed for a comparable quotation

1. Grade and specification

Monel 400 / UNS N04400, ASTM B127 or approved project specification, edition and supplementary requirements.

2. Product form

Plate, sheet, strip, coil or cut blanks. State whether slit edges, sheared edges or another agreed edge condition is required.

3. Dimensions and tolerances

Thickness × width × length, quantity, thickness tolerance, width and length tolerance, flatness, squareness and coil ID/OD where applicable.

4. Condition and surface

Required annealed, hot-rolled or cold-worked condition, finish, scale-removal requirement, protective film and permitted surface criteria.

5. Documents and inspection

Certificate type, heat/lot traceability, dimensional report, ordered tests, PMI or third-party inspection with acceptance criteria.

6. Commercial delivery

Pieces or weight, destination, Incoterm, requested delivery window, packing method and any marking or document-language requirement.

Condition control

Do not leave temper and processing implied

Alloy 400 is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy and is strengthened primarily by cold work rather than precipitation hardening. The ordered condition influences formability, hardness and mechanical properties.

Ask the quotation to repeat the supplied condition and the applicable specification. If the buyer will form, weld or machine the material, state the downstream process so that condition, surface and dimensional requirements can be reviewed before order placement.

Inspection and release

Define evidence before production or cutting

Certificate and traceability

Specify the required MTC or certificate format and require heat or lot identification to remain linked to sheets, coils and cut blanks.

Dimensions and surface

Define measurement points, thickness tolerance, flatness, width and length tolerance, edge condition and acceptable surface criteria.

Ordered verification

List required mechanical tests, hardness, grain-size verification, PMI, NDT or third-party witness with method, sampling and acceptance criteria.

PMI note: positive material identification can support alloy verification, but it does not replace the ordered certificate, mechanical-test results, condition verification or traceability records.

Export packing

Protect surface, flatness, edges and heat identity

For plate and cut sheet, specify interleaving or surface protection, moisture barrier, strapped bundles or an export case, plus separation by size and heat. For strip or coil, state coil orientation, edge protection, spool or pallet requirements and handling limits. Agree packing before quotation because it affects gross weight, dimensions and freight planning.

Schedule risk

What commonly changes lead time

Lead time is affected by thickness and width, ordered condition, mill or conversion route, slit or cut-to-size processing, flatness and surface requirements, special testing, document approval and third-party inspection. Request an order-specific delivery estimate only after these details are fixed.
