How to Specify MTC, PMI & Third-Party Inspection

“MTC required” or “SGS inspection” is not a complete requirement. Define document type, inspection scope, sampling, acceptance criteria, witness points and release authority before quotation.

Different controls

Understand what each item does

MTC / inspection certificate

Records material identity and specified test results. State the required certificate type, governing standard and whether originals, digital copies or validation are required.

PMI

Positive material identification checks alloy chemistry with an agreed method and scope. It does not replace every laboratory test or prove all mechanical properties.

Third-party inspection

An independent inspector witnesses or reviews agreed activities. Name the agency only after defining scope, hold/witness points, report format and who pays.

Traceability

Heat/lot identity must connect material marking, packing list, certificate, test reports and order lines through cutting and repacking.

Timing matters

Place controls before material release

At RFQ

Send the inspection and test plan or list required certificates, sampling, acceptance standards, agency and estimated inspection location.

At purchase order

Freeze revisions, notification period, hold points, retest rules, concession process and document approval route.

Before shipment

Confirm material identity, inspection release note, approved reports, packing marks and any outstanding deviation.

At receipt

Check package integrity, markings, quantities and document-to-material traceability before mixing or machining lots.
