Alloy 625 Plate, Sheet and Strip: A Buyer’s RFQ Guide

A request for “625 plate” leaves important quotation variables unresolved. For buyers ordering flat material for fabricated process equipment, marine components or formed parts, the supplied condition, dimensional acceptance and inspection plan should be settled before price comparison.

Start with the product standard and delivery condition

ASTM B443 covers N06625 plate, sheet and strip. Specify the required edition and any controlling drawing, customer specification or ASME requirement. A bar or pipe specification should not be substituted simply because the alloy designation is the same.

Grade 1: annealed

B443 identifies Grade 1 as annealed material. Write the required grade explicitly in the inquiry rather than relying on the word “annealed” in a general product description.

Grade 2: solution annealed

B443 identifies Grade 2 as solution annealed material. Ask for certificate evidence of the specified condition. Grade 2 is not automatically an upgrade for every design; the engineering specification controls selection.

Application and acceptance

Describe the service and fabrication route, including forming, machining or welding. General alloy suitability does not establish acceptance for a particular pressure component or corrosive environment.

Do not compare mechanical-property figures without checking product form, thickness, condition and the governing standard. This guide does not replace design approval or the purchase specification.

Describe each size line so offers are comparable

Plate and sheet

State thickness × width × length, pieces and total weight. Identify whether dimensions are as supplied or finished after machining. Add thickness tolerance, flatness, squareness, surface condition and the acceptable cutting process where these matter.

Strip and coil

State thickness, slit width, width tolerance and quantity by size. For coil supply, include inside diameter, permitted outside diameter, maximum coil weight, winding direction where relevant, and any restriction on welds or splices. For straight strip, give cut length and its tolerance.

Edges and fabrication allowance

Confirm mill edge, slit edge or cut edge requirements and acceptable burrs. Drawings should identify critical edges and machining allowance. Do not assume a quoted blank includes finishing to the final component dimensions.

Separate sheet, plate, strip and coil lines in the RFQ. A quotation for a different product form, condition or tolerance is an alternative offer and should be labelled accordingly.

Agree inspection and traceability before cutting

Request the required MTC type and specify chemical analysis, mechanical results and heat/lot identification. If EN 10204 documentation is required, name the certificate type and acceptance process instead of writing only “certificate included”. Confirm which documents can be supplied for the proposed material.

PMI can support material identification, but an instrument grade match is not a substitute for all chemical, mechanical or heat-treatment evidence. Define the method, coverage and acceptance criteria. Any additional NDT, corrosion test or third-party witnessing needs its own agreed scope.

Cut blanks and split coils must remain linked to their source heat/lot and certificate. Agree how marking will be transferred and how multiple heats will be separated on the packing list. Review deviations before release, not after the goods arrive.

Read the MTC, PMI and inspection planning guide

Packing and lead-time questions that affect the order

Specify protection against moisture, handling damage and surface contamination, together with pallet or crate requirements, lifting arrangements and identification labels. For strip coils, agree edge protection and restraint; for sheet and plate, agree supports and surface separation appropriate to the finish and shipping route.

Ask whether the offered route uses available material, cutting/slitting from larger stock, or scheduled production. Availability, minimum quantity and lead time must be confirmed for the actual dimensions and condition. A stock-route quote does not guarantee every requested size is immediately ready.

Request a timeline that distinguishes material preparation, testing, document review, packing and dispatch from transport time. State the named destination and Incoterm; ask who arranges inspection and which approval or payment events start the quoted lead time.
