Inconel 718 Plate, Sheet & Strip RFQ Guide

Alloy 718 flat products are condition-sensitive. A checkable inquiry should define the exact product form, governing specification and revision, dimensions, tolerances, heat-treatment condition, inspection and packing.

Nickel alloy plate and sheet prepared for industrial supply

Begin with product form

Plate, sheet and strip are not interchangeable RFQ descriptions

Identify the required item as plate, cut sheet, strip, coil or cut blank. Include thickness, width, length or coil dimensions, quantity and the applicable dimensional tolerances. If blanks will be machined or formed, state the required machining allowance, edge condition and rolling-direction requirement.

Use Inconel 718 / UNS N07718 / W.Nr. 2.4668 for material identity, but let the purchaser-approved specification and drawing control acceptance.

Controlling standards

ASTM B670 and AMS 5596 must be called out precisely

ASTM B670

Covers rolled UNS N07718 plate, sheet and strip in the annealed condition. State the required revision and every supplementary purchase requirement.

AMS 5596

Covers Alloy 718 sheet, strip, foil and plate within its stated thickness scope and solution heat-treated condition. Cite the exact revision required by the drawing or end user.

Project specification

Drawing notes, approved-source rules, melt route, heat treatment, testing and acceptance criteria can be more restrictive than a general material designation.

Do not request “ASTM/AMS equivalent” when one document controls the order. The standards define different scopes and acceptance details; a supplier quotation should repeat the controlling document and revision.

RFQ fields

Information needed for a checkable quotation

1. Material and standard

Inconel 718 / UNS N07718, exact ASTM, AMS or project specification, revision and any purchaser supplements.

2. Product form

Plate, sheet, strip, coil or cut blanks. State whether multiple pieces may be supplied from one heat or lot.

3. Dimensions

Thickness × width × length, coil inner/outer diameter where relevant, tolerances, flatness, squareness and edge condition.

4. Condition and finish

Required heat-treatment condition, surface finish, scale-removal requirement, rolling direction and protective film if applicable.

5. Quantity

Number of sheets or blanks, total weight, coil quantity and any trial or sample requirement.

6. Inspection and delivery

MTC, traceability, ordered tests, third-party inspection, packing, Incoterm, destination and required delivery window.

Condition control

Do not leave heat treatment implied

Alloy 718 develops its required properties through controlled solution treatment and precipitation aging. The delivery condition and any subsequent buyer heat treatment must match the governing specification and part-processing route.

Ask the quotation to state the supplied condition explicitly. Do not infer final mechanical properties from the alloy name, and do not accept a condition substitution without qualified engineering review.

Inspection and release

Define evidence before the purchase order

Certificate and traceability

Request the required MTC or certificate format tied to heat and lot identification. Specify how traceability must remain visible after cutting.

Dimensions and surface

Define measurement locations, thickness tolerance, flatness, width and length tolerance, edge condition and acceptable surface criteria.

Ordered testing

State required mechanical tests, hardness, NDT, PMI or third-party witness with the method, sampling and acceptance criteria.

PMI note: positive material identification can support alloy verification, but it does not replace the ordered certificate, heat-treatment evidence or mechanical-test results.

Export packing

Protect flatness, surface and heat identity

For cut sheet and plate, specify interleaving or surface protection, moisture barrier, strapped bundles or an export case, and separation by heat or size. For strip in coil, add coil orientation, edge protection, spool or pallet requirements and handling limits. Packing requirements should be agreed before quotation because they affect weight, dimensions and freight planning.

Schedule risk

What usually changes lead time

Lead time is affected by thickness and width, required condition, mill or conversion route, cut-to-size processing, flatness and surface requirements, special testing, document approval and third-party inspection. Request an order-specific delivery estimate only after these details are fixed.
