Buyer resource · UNS N07718
Alloy 718 is age-hardenable, so the grade name alone is not a complete purchase description. A usable RFQ should identify the governing specification, required delivery condition, dimensions, inspection and documentation.

Start with the controlling documents
Inconel 718 is commonly identified as UNS N07718 or W.Nr. 2.4668. For round bar, buyers often reference ASTM B637 or a project-specific AMS document. These references should not be treated as interchangeable: the required condition, heat treatment, testing and acceptance criteria may differ.
State the exact specification and revision required by the drawing, end user or purchase order. If the requirement is still being developed, say so and request a documented technical review before quotation.
RFQ fields

Diameter, tolerance, length, straightness or machining allowance, plus peeled, ground, turned or other surface requirements.
Required solution-treated or age-hardened condition exactly as defined by the applicable specification or drawing.
Total kilograms or number of bars, acceptable piece lengths, cut-piece quantities and any sample requirement.
MTC requirements, heat-number traceability, dimensional report and any ordered UT, PMI or third-party inspection.
Marking, rust/moisture protection where applicable, bundle or export-case preference, Incoterm and destination.
Avoid a common sourcing error
ASTM B637 covers precipitation-hardening nickel alloy bars, forgings and forging stock, while individual AMS documents can define a narrower product form and condition. Do not request “ASTM/AMS equivalent” without identifying which document controls acceptance.
Where aerospace or other controlled applications are involved, include the complete drawing note, revision, approved-source restrictions and additional testing requirements in the RFQ. A commercial material offer should not be assumed to satisfy an aerospace purchase specification.
Release controls
Request a certificate tied to the heat number and governing specification. Chemical and mechanical results should be reviewed against the ordered condition.
Agree the measurement points, tolerance, straightness, cut length and acceptable surface condition before production or cutting.
Order ultrasonic testing, PMI, macro examination or third-party witness only when required, with the method and acceptance criteria stated.
Preserve heat/lot identification through cutting and packing. Specify tags, bundle separation and export protection needed at destination.
Note: PMI can support alloy identification, but it does not replace the ordered material certificate or mechanical-test evidence.
Schedule risk
Lead time depends on diameter and length, melt and supply route, delivery condition, machining or grinding, ordered testing, document review and packing. Special diameters, controlled heat-treatment requirements and third-party inspection should be identified before the purchase order rather than added at final release.
